Shade Sails
Shade sails for schools, nurseries and playgrounds, creating flexible open-air cover over seating, play and outdoor learning areas.
Shade sails create open, flexible shade for school playgrounds, nursery gardens and outdoor learning areas without enclosing the space. They can be positioned over seating, sand and water play, quiet areas or parts of a wider playground design.
We plan each layout around the area to be covered, the sun’s path across the site, available fixing points and where posts can sit without disrupting access or play. A shade sail can be a focused improvement or form part of a complete playground project alongside equipment, surfacing and seating.
Installed shade sail examples
Our work includes a triangular sail over seating at The Oval Primary School, shade within Belleville School’s sensory garden and a larger courtyard installation at Chandos School. Together, these examples show how shade can be planned around very different outdoor spaces.
Choosing the right position
The area to be covered, movement of sunlight, fixing points and nearby buildings all influence the layout. Photographs and approximate measurements are useful, but you do not need a finished specification before getting in touch.
For a roofed structure beside a building or play area, compare our school canopies. If the brief needs a freestanding teaching shelter, see our outdoor classrooms.
