BS EN 1176 and BS EN 1177 are the main safety standards used for children’s playgrounds in the UK. They help designers, manufacturers, installers and playground operators make consistent decisions about equipment, layout, surfacing and ongoing care.
BS EN means a European Standard adopted as a British Standard. The two standards work together but have different roles: BS EN 1176 deals mainly with playground equipment, while BS EN 1177 deals with impact-attenuating surfacing.
BS EN 1176: playground equipment
Part 1 sets the general safety requirements and test methods. Other parts add requirements for particular equipment or explain how a playground should be installed and cared for:
- Part 1: general safety requirements and test methods.
- Part 2: swings.
- Part 3: slides.
- Part 4: runways.
- Part 5: carousels.
- Part 6: rocking equipment.
- Part 7: installation, maintenance and operation.
- Part 10: fully enclosed play equipment.
- Part 11: spatial networks.
Several parts can apply to one playground. A design with swings and slides, for example, is considered against the general requirements in Part 1 as well as the equipment-specific requirements in Parts 2 and 3.
BS EN 1177: playground surfacing
BS EN 1177 sets out methods for testing how well playground surfaces reduce impact. The appropriate surface depends on the equipment’s critical fall height and the layout around it, so the same finish is not required for every playground.
Wet pour, bonded rubber mulch, rubber grass mats, artificial grass and loose-fill materials can each suit different sites. Our playground safety surfacing options explain the finishes available.
From design to installation
Playground safety does not end with the equipment itself. The layout, use zones, access, surfacing and installation need to work together around the way the site will be used.
- Allow the required space and fall zones around equipment.
- Match impact-attenuating surfacing to the critical fall height where needed.
- Follow the manufacturer’s installation and maintenance instructions.
Planning a school or public playground
For schools, nurseries, councils and other public play areas, the standards form part of a wider brief. Age range, play value, accessibility, visibility and everyday use also shape the finished playground.
At AllOutPlay, we design and manufacture commercial playground equipment to meet the relevant requirements. Our complete playground service brings equipment, surfacing, installation and site details into one coordinated project. If you are beginning to plan a new space, our free playground design service can help develop the layout.
Please note: This guide is a practical introduction, not a replacement for the current standards or a project-specific safety assessment. Standards are revised over time. Refer to the current BSI BS EN 1176 series and BSI BS EN 1177 document for their formal titles and current editions.
